'I Warn You'
Perhaps the most politically famous guest I've had on Speakola podcast is former UK opposition leader Neil Kinnock. It's a great chat, and 'I Warn You' turns 42 today.
Kinnock is the consummate storyteller, and he says in the podcast that this speech was written in the back of a car which two months later flew 60 yards across a medium strip on a highway before rolling and landing on its roof. Kinnock walked away. It's a great chat, traversing a teenage meeting with Aneurin Bevan, growing up working class, cricket, rock music, socialism, entering parliament, becoming leader,. the miners' strike, Scargill, Thatcher, two losing elections, the European Commission, Brexit and the pandemic. Kinnock is a majestic speaker, his 'I warn you' speech and his 1985 Labour Conference speech are still shared online as political classics.
