A somewhat sombre Covid affected Oscars night was brightened on this day in 2021 by Korean actor Yuh-Juong Youn’s short but funny acceptance speech.
The sweetness and comedic impact was perhaps enhanced by the second language factor, but really it was the style and confidence Youn exuded that won plaudits around the world.
In the space of a minute or so, Youn manages to:
flirt with Brad Pitt;
slap down a lifetime of name mispronunciations;
pay tribute to fellow nominees
demonstrate humility;
produce a genuinely funny and original family thank you.
She won the Oscar for best supporting female actor for her part in Minari.
Youn began winning awards for her acting in 1969 when she won a Best Young Talent award for her part in Mr Gong. She’s worked solidly in Korean film and television for nearly 55 years. It’s wonderful the world took notice.
