'We just won an Oscar' - an overlooked gem from Jamie Lee Curtis
We had our near annual chat on Sammy J's Breakfast show about great Oscars speeches. This is one I've not focused on before, but it made both of us tear up.
The Oscars again yielded a couple of Speakola-worthy moments, perhaps most notably Emma Stone embracing a wardrobe malfunction and rolling into an excellent acceptance. The idea of best supporting actress winners from previous years introducing this year’s nominees was also quite lovely, and emotionally charged.
But the one I dug up for the segment that got to both Sammy and I was this one, by Jamie Lee Curtis, who is variously loved in our house for everything from Trading Places to Freaky Friday. Both her parents were nominated for Oscars, but neither ever won. This is really well structured, humble, and then just beautiful.
I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I’m not. I am hundreds of people. I am hundreds of people.
Daniel, where’s Daniel? Daniels, Jonathan, Leline, the entire crew … the entire group of artists who made this movie. WE just won an Oscar.
To my dream team, my agent, Alan, Heidi, James, Jane Ross, we just won an Oscar.
To my family, my beautiful husband Christopher Guest, our daughters Annie and Ruby, my sister Kelly, we just won an Oscar
To all of the people who have supported the genre movies I have made for all these years, the thousands and hundreds and thousands of people, WE JUST WON AN OSCAR TOGETHER!
And my mother and father were both nominated for Oscars in different catagories … [breaks down] I just won an Oscar.
What a beautiful speech from a spectacular actor.
A new episode of Speakola podcast will go up this week, featuring comedy writer Declan Fay and his lovely graduation speech.
