'We roll tonight, to the guitar bite!'
Speakola is mainly about real life speeches, but we have tucked away some movie speeches that ROCK! This one is Jack Black's pre gig motivational in 'School of Rock', written by Mike White.
It’s actually 21 years today since ‘School of Rock’ came out, a contender for best kids film of all time. Certainly it’s my favourite live action kids film. I’ve watched it literally a hundred times — my son who has cerebral palsy is obsessed with it, and it never gets tired.
This is the pre-gig motivational:
Jack Black (by Mike White): 'We roll tonight to the guitar bite!' Motivational speech to band - 2003
Released 20 November 2003
So get your rest, no late night parties drinking tequila and trying to get lucky. Chances like this do not come along every day. Now you played hard in here, people, and I am proud of every last stinking one of you. So let's just give this everything we got. We may fall on our faces, but if we do, we will fall with dignity! With a guitar in our hands, and rock in our hearts! And in the words of AC/DC: "We roll tonight to the guitar bite, and for those about to rock, I salute you.
But that’s not actually the best monologue in the film That honour belongs to this masterpiece:
Jack Black (by Mike White): 'The world is run by The Man!', School of Rock - 2003
released 3 October 2003, USA
Give up, just quit, because in this life, you can’t win. Yeah, you can try, but in the end you’re just gonna lose, big time, because the world is run by the Man. The Man, oh, you don’t know the Man. He’s everywhere. In the White House… down the hall… Ms. Mullins, she’s the Man. And the Man ruined the ozone, he’s burning down the Amazon, and he kidnapped Shamu and put her in a chlorine tank! And there used to be a way to stick it to the Man. It was called rock ‘n roll, but guess what, oh no, the Man ruined that, too, with a little thing called MTV! So don’t waste your time trying to make anything cool or pure or awesome ’cause the Man is just gonna call you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. So do yourselves a favour and just GIVE UP!
Mike White, apart from playing the actual Ned Schneebly in this film, went on to write the magnificent White Lotus.
As a convenient side note, our film ‘Ange & The Boss’ is having a White Lotus series 2 adjacent moment when it plays in Palermo between 10-15th December at the Paladino d’Oro International Sports Film Festival. It’s about the great Ferenc Puskas, and the years he spent coaching in Australia. His captain at South Melbourne Hellas was now Tottenham Hotspur manager, Ange Postecoglou.
It’s playing here!
It’s also playing in Melbourne at the Thornbury Picture House on 21st December at 4pm. We were one of the three top selling tickets at the Greek Film Festival.
