What are your best speeches of 2022?
My annual 'Speakolies' radio segment is on The Grapevine on Triple R at 11.15am on Monday. I know this is my job, but will you do it for me? 😊 What are your 2022 faves?
I do speech compilation lists every year and it’s that time of year. Here are some previous ones:
It’s always a scramble to try to find the pick of the bunch. And I’m a one person curating outfit! So many slip under my gaze, and I love it when people find hidden gems. Help us out!
Here are some 2022 frontrunners to get people thinking:
The great Welsh actor is a freakish talent when it comes to impromptu, fictional fire up speeches for Welsh sporting teams. He’s produced the trick before, but this one is note perfect. Sheen is coming to Australia to star in Peter Schaffer’s ‘Aamdeus’ which opens just after Christmas. I’ve put in an interview request to get him on the podcast. Fingers crossed!
I can’t think of a speech that had a bigger online impact than this one, and fascinating that it was directed to an audience which President Zelensky must have known would probably not hear it. Although the real audience was of course those of us outside Russia in the rest of the world. I wrote a blog about it earlier in the year. The biggest news story of 2022, and possibly the year’s greatest speech, even in translation.
It’s another terrible week for mass shootings in the USA, and sadly the words spoken in response to the tragic realities usually soar higher than any resolve for change. The Ulvade tragedy murdered 19 children and two teachers, and Chris Murphy delivered maybe the best speech in response on the Senate floor. I wrote a blog about that too.
I thought Barbados Prime Minister Mia Motley’s COP-27 speech even exceeded her COP-26 speech, When will leaders lead?, which I had pegged as one of the best speeches of the year last year. She’s an oratorical marvel, great voice and timing, the best speaker in the world at the moment on climate change.
Another one I’m trying to get on the podcast, a request with management at the moment. How joyous is this? And it follows up another viral post match interview at the Tokyo Olympics last year. She is so infectiously happy, and the greatest thing to hit women’s rugby since … well she’s the greatest thing to hit women’s rugby.
There are some contenders that will be thereabout for best speech of the year. But what have you seen and heard? US midterms? Conservative party implosions in the UK? An Australian election? The Ukraine war? Climate emergency? And I’d love more speeches out of Africa and Asia, which slide under the media radar in Australia. You might even have a personal eulogy or wedding speech that is your speech of the year. I’ll put them up! All I need is the text and a photo.
Please use the comments, or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with your 2022 favourites.
I’ve made Speakola pretty much for free these last seven years. Becoming a paid member is a way of saying thanks, and joining what is a growing speech-loving community.
The Speakolies are next Monday at 11.15 on Triple R.
Here is last year’s show (complete with red carpet1)
There was no carpet. This is my first ever footnote on this platform.
